Clemenskvartalet is a housing project in central Oslo by Mad Arkitekter with Haptic Architects, that is fast becoming a touchpoint in the Nordic conversation around urban design, and Oslo’s post-industrial waterfront.

Situated at the threshold between Oslo’s historic core and its revitalized port district, Bjørvika, Clemenskvartalet demonstrates how residential architecture can reconcile high-density living with generous public space and human-scale design.

Bucking the recent architectural trend for tall new ‘slab’ type blocks, the project ranges from five to eight storeys and features a range of characterful facades in the warm colourful tones of Oslo’s historic townhouses and city houses – creating a whole neighbourhood feel within a singular city block.

The mixed-tenure housing wraps around a central, semi-public, green courtyard space, interconnected to adjacent streets and urban spaces via a series of passageways, while larger and smaller roof terraces support the new quarter’s social infrastructure.

Providing over 250 apartments, and new town houses with gardens, in a desirable city location, Clemenskvartalet is a highly recognisable and well-received new addition to Oslo’s urban landscape, emulating the city’s ambitions for quality of architecture and quality of living – all within the parameters of Norway’s residential building regulations.
