Haptic and Nordic won the competition for a new hotel in Bodø, northern Norway. Bodø has distinct natural hues and tones that are unique to the area, particularly the vibrant pink winter light. This has been echoed in the concept and materiality of the design, which consists of three primary moves.
The monolithic base, which is a combination of rough local stone and pigmented concrete, is designed to appear part of the landscape - stepping down to reflect the topography of the site. The main body consists of pre-fabricated timber fin panels, allowing for ease of construction, integrated solar shading, and a sustainable materiality approach which relates the building further with it's surroundings. Finally, the cantilevered 'beacon' is a mix of opaque and transparent glazing, maximising views of the Norwegian landscape whilst creating a dialogue with the city below.
