The project is for the complete refurbishment and new rear extension of an end-of-terrace Grade 2 listed Georgian house in Ramsgate.
The project seeks to create a new contemporary extension whilst respecting the Georgian heritage of the listed building. The rear extension is divided in two elements. The lower volume is a contemporary timber frame composed of silver fir glulam beams and birch ply soffits that define an open plan kitchen with a terrace above and a double height dining area fully glazed to maximise daylight in the living space. The second volume hovering above is a simple white rendered box that matches the existing, replacing an existing four-storey extension.
The clients brief includes a kitchen / dining area, two large living spaces, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a utility room. The existing basement is also to be extended to provide a large flexible space for reception, art studio, entertainment, guest room. The internal minimal material palette comprises a new terrazzo flooring on the ground and basement levels, and white oiled oak for the joinery.
